It’s the little things…

Big things matter more in direction only

The little things matter less than the big things in life. And yet, the little things are what makes life worth living.

Here is what I mean by little things:

  • Reading a great book.
  • A special moment with your kids.
  • That time you got the BEST belly laugh over nothing.
  • A good cry, so good that you feel better after getting it out.
  • An accolade at work.
  • The amazing feeling of the sight of fresh snowfall.
  • A nice refreshing beverage.
  • A stroll through nature.
  • Your morning cup of coffee.
  • Savoring a favorite dessert.
  • Gazing up at the stars wonder.
  • An experience you will never forget (ziplining, bungee jumping, repelling a waterfall, etc.)
  • Staying home and cozy on a rainy day.
  • That moment when you are tipsy, but not yet drunk.
  • The feeling of completing a small DIY project around the house.
  • A damn good hug.
  • Seeing a new place for the first time.

These are the little things in life.

No one moment will change your life, but together they make up a majority of the experiences that make life worth living.

They are things that are not “big” in the grand scheme of life. These are not a getting a degree, a job offer, a promotion, a marriage, a birth of a child.

They also aren’t the bad things. The death of a family member, a friend, a pet, a prolonged sickness, a failed business, a fight with a family member, natural disaster, or any other numerous things that could happen.

Life is comprised of moments big and small. And I am not downplaying the importance of the big moments in your life. They are big for a reason. They are the moments. But they really only matter in direction only.

A majority of your life is made up of the little things.

And the little things it turns out are the big things.

Those moments that aren’t big in volume, but are full of life.

Learning to cherish all of the little things good and bad is the key to building the life you want.

  • Not the day you earned your degree.
  • Not the job offer you were hoping for.
  • Not the day you get a promotion.
  • Not the day of your marriage.
  • Not the honeymoon.
  • Not the birth of your children.
  • Not the day you retire.

Those are important milestones, but they aren’t your daily life.

So go out there and enjoy those little things. Embrace what life really is.

P.S. This is a letter to myself, as much as anyone else.

  1. Love this reminder to take note of the small things that make up a happy life. Reminds me of a great Vonnegut quote:

“And I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, ‘If this isn’t nice, I don’t know what is.”
