Recently, I’ve heard my son say he is too busy to do X, Y, or Z.
And it cracks me up to hear an 11-year-old say how busy he is and that he doesn’t have time for things.
To be fair, he is fairly busy between sports, music lessons, and family activities. But still…
I always respond that he is not too busy; he is simply choosing not to do the other thing.
But I am not one to talk.
My wife has been asking me to do a warranty replacement on some of our faucets for months, and I make every excuse not to do it.
I’m obviously not too busy. I just don’t want to do it.
Both my son and I should own our issues.
We are choosing to spend our time doing other things.
And that is totally acceptable, but we have to make sure not to lie to ourselves about it.
Are You REALLY Too Busy?
How have we all gotten so lost in our priorities?
Well, perhaps because our society has made it acceptable to say we are busy.
It makes other people feel slightly better if we say we are busy and not simply ignoring the hell out of them.
It makes us feel better that we aren’t being total assholes, when the fact is we very well might be.
So no, I haven’t filed the warranty replacements for our broken-down faucets yet.
I haven’t wanted to. The process is a hassle, and the last time I did it, pulling out the corroded ones and putting in the new ones was a pain in the ass.
But yeah, I could do it, if I wanted to.
Let’s All Stop Using Busy as an Excuse
You’re not too busy to work out.
You’re not too busy to take that meeting.
You’re not too busy to cook meals at home.
You’re not too busy to start that business.
You are 100% choosing not to.
